Conditions We Treat

Eye Allergies

Eye allergies, or allergic conjunctivitis, occur when the surface of the eye reacts to airborne allergens such as pollen, dust mites, pet dander, or mold. The eye releases histamine and other chemicals, producing the classic combination of itching, redness, and watering. Allergies may flare seasonally (hay fever) or persist year-round.

The hallmark is itching

If your eyes itch, allergy is the most likely cause. Unlike infectious pink eye, allergic conjunctivitis is not contagious and usually affects both eyes. It often travels with nasal allergy symptoms such as sneezing and a runny or congested nose.

Common symptoms

  • Itching — the most distinctive symptom
  • Redness in both eyes
  • Watery eyes or a stringy, mucus-like discharge
  • Puffy or swollen eyelids
  • Burning and a gritty feeling

How we treat eye allergies

We confirm the diagnosis, rule out other causes of a red eye, and build a plan to keep you comfortable:

  • Reduce exposure — simple steps like closing windows on high-pollen days, washing hands and face, and cool compresses help considerably.
  • Don't rub — rubbing releases more histamine and makes itching worse (and, over time, can affect the cornea).
  • Artificial tears to rinse allergens from the eye and dilute irritants.
  • Antihistamine / mast-cell-stabilizer drops (such as olopatadine or ketotifen) that both relieve and prevent symptoms — available over the counter and by prescription.
  • Short courses of prescription anti-inflammatory or steroid drops for significant flares, used under our supervision.
  • Treating related dryness — allergies and dry eye frequently overlap, and addressing both gives the best relief.

If itchy, red, watery eyes are interfering with your day or your usual allergy drops aren't enough, we can tailor a more effective regimen.
